In the wake of the recent bushfires that have had a devastating impact on communities and the environment across our nation, Sony Foundation Australia recognises there are going to be many long term effects that Australians will be coping with for some time to come.
In light of this, Sony Foundation Australia will work in collaboration organisations on the ground to help support young Australians in communities most affected in the aftermath of the bushfires with the launch of a special Bushfire Appeal.
Sony Foundation Australia, the charity backed by the Sony group of companies, will kick start the initiative with a $200,000 donation with additional revenue to be raised from the release of "Artists Unite for Fire Fight," a special charity album featuring 23 live recordings from artists who performed at the historic Fire Fight Concert. Sony Music Entertainment Australia will donate all its proceeds from the album to Sony Foundation Australia's Bushfire appeal.
Research shows that following a natural disaster, 27% of children and adolescents suffered moderate or severe PTSD. Natural disasters are a unique form of trauma being distinguished by the loss of one’s local services, social networks, community hall or sports club and opportunities for social gatherings.
Sony Foundation Australia previously provided assistance following the 2009 Black Saturday Fires and 2011 Queensland floods, and their impact shows to this day. A $2 million donation to fund a youth centre in the community of Goodna, Queensland helped to provide traumatised youth with a safe place and with social activities. The centre is still a key part of the community today.
